U2 and Las Vegas. The association between the Irish group, led by its messianic rock star Bono, wearing two ostentatious rosaries around his neck, and the “city of sin” founded by Mormons, is surprising at first glance. In fact, its materialization with Sphere, the new futuristic room that radiates the city of Nevada, is rather obvious: these two projects built on emphasis were destined to meet.

Presented only at this location, U2: UV Attention baby – UV pour Ultraviolet (Light My Way)one of the titles of the great work published in 1991 – claims to go beyond the simple concert to offer a “collective art and music show” supposed to revolutionize exercise. The quartet, whose latest album of original songs, Songs of Experiencedates back to 2017, seems to have shifted into self-celebration since after having commemorated, at the time, the thirtieth anniversary of The Joshua Tree (1987), he does it again today with Attention baby (1991). At least his choice fell on the two objects, produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, generally considered to be the best in his catalog.

Las Vegas still inspired U2 to write a new song, Atomic City, played as an encore. It served as a teaser, on September 29, for the first of forty dates planned at Sphere until March 2, 2024 – the price of places still available ranges between $375 and $2,646. The title refers to another name reserved for the city in the 1950s, when tourists came to admire, like fireworks, the explosions produced by the nearby Nevada nuclear test site. A particularity which earned the young Elvis Presley to be presented as a “singer with atomic power” when it debuted at the New Frontier hotel-casino in 1956.

The ghost of the King has already entered the playlist that Pauli Lovejoy broadcasts to wait, with Thus spoke Zarathustra, by Richard Strauss, which announced with a bang the entry on stage of Elvis, and the inevitable Long live Las Vegas. The DJ travels around the pit in a Trabant decorated with neon lights. The link is thus established between the Berlin of German reunification, the framework ofAttention baby, and the host city. “When U2 discovered Sphere, they wanted to return to this album for a very visual spectaclesays Willie Williams, who has worked on the group’s scenography since 1982. As was already the Zoo TV tour [1992-1993], which announced our daily lives with a pre-TikTok video confessional and, five years later, PopMart, with images the size of the stadiums where it stopped. So we went with an aesthetic reminiscent of Zoo TV but on a scale that we couldn’t imagine at the time. »
