The assembly of journalists from Repubblica clearly and radically contests the cuts plan proposed for the umpteenth time by the company to the editorial staff. An absolutely inadequate policy to guarantee the economic stability of the newspaper which would indeed be further impoverished of a wealth of experience and skills.
For these reasons, the assembly mandates the Cdr to bind any opening of trade union negotiations to the presentation of a clear and exhaustive editorial plan, which details: the investments necessary for the relaunch of the newspaper, the objectives that we intend to achieve with further reduced staff as well as projects involving the editorial staff as a whole. And last but not least, it asks the company to indicate what the choices are for revenue growth, in particular the digital component, so that they are adequate to the challenges of the publishing market.
The assembly also poses an unavoidable issue of responsibility with respect to the crisis that the Republic is going through. While recognizing the difficult moment of this phase of great changes, the economically negative results are also attributable to the choices of the editorial line which is unable to intercept new readers and which has alienated the traditional reference audience of the Repubblica newspaper; but also to management strategies, the result of incorrect forecasts and results that are still not sufficient to guarantee the balance of the accounts, particularly in the development of digital. The journalists of Repubblica in recent years have demonstrated a great spirit of sacrifice and a strong emotional bond with the newspaper but they are not willing to be the only ones to once again pay the price for decisions that are often not shared, indeed often contested by the editorial staff itself.
The assembly then entrusts the drafting committee with a five-day strike package to be used if the requested responses do not arrive before the opening of negotiations on the reduction of labor costs, which should be based on two principles: total voluntariness of the exits and reinstatement of editorial numbers.
