Afrobarometer amplifies African voices at COP28: African citizens demand urgent climate action

Afrobarometer attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) last week and reported on the demand from African citizens for urgent climate action, demonstrating the commitment of the world’s leading research organization. survey of the continent to integrate African perspectives into the global climate discourse.

Addressing key stakeholders in the fight against climate change

The Devex Climate+ Summit brought together influential changemakers and thought leaders on panels and in workshops to delve deeper into the complex relationship between climate change and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Keynote speakers included Alok Sharma, COP26 President and climate and finance researcher at the Rockefeller Foundation; Martin Edlund, CEO of Malaria No More; Gernot Laganda, director of the Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction Directorate of the World Food Program; Zitouni Ould-Dada, deputy director of the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment at the Food and Agriculture Organization; and Ismahene Elouafi, Executive Director of the CGIAR.

Data from the most recent Afrobarometer survey reveals that among Africans who have heard of climate change, most say it makes life worse and requires urgent action. But almost half of Africans are unfamiliar with the concept of climate change – even though many have personally observed adverse changes in weather patterns.
