The slogan should not leave anyone indifferent: “You have to be sick to attack a healthcare professional”, can we read on three posters showing a nurse, a doctor and a pharmacist, each victim of violence. Starting this Tuesday, December 19, and for a month, it must be broadcast on social networks and posted in places of care – hospitals, pharmacies, medical practices. This communication campaign aims to “change the behavior of violent patients” and to “encourage professional victims to file a complaint”we argue to the Ministry of Health.

This is one of the first variations of the forty-two measures announced by the government at the end of September to combat violence against caregivers. A detailed plan after the murder of Carène Mezino, this nurse stabbed on May 22 at the Reims University Hospital (Marne), and centered on three components: prevention, security and support. It provides in particular for the strengthening of criminal sanctions, the development of alert systems, and even the training of professionals.

This political response is expected in the face of a large-scale phenomenon which, from one news story to another, is shaking players in the sector. A doctor was attacked again on Friday, December 15, in Auxerre, according to reports from the ranks of SOS Médecins. “Unfortunately, these are news items that have become commonplace and which we must fight against, otherwise we will lack volunteers to provide treatment, alerts Doctor Jean-Christophe Masseron, president of SOS Médecins and co-author of the report commissioned by the government on the subject. Violence is unfortunately a much more general fact of society, but certain sectors – places of care, schools and other public services – must be protected”he said, also emphasizing that “the insecurity of health professionals undermines the attractiveness of our professions”.

Increasing tensions

This manager, who supports the need to raise awareness among the general public about violence and communicate about the risks involved, also calls on professionals to “better explain the patient journey” and to “make circuits more fluid, particularly in emergencies”.

There is no shortage of figures to tell, in hospitals and in the city, of ever-increasing tensions: 18,768 reports from 368 establishments were reported, in 2022, to the National Observatory of Violence in Health Care, which represents around 30,000 attacks on people and 5,000 attacks on property, according to the Ministry of Health, which promises a new updated report in the coming weeks. Every day, on average, sixty-five professionals are victims of physical or verbal violence, it is also estimated.
