Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Hungarian government to develop the Panther KF51 to series production. The contract has now been signed in Zalaegerszeg.

The development contract is worth around 288 million euros. The work includes the construction and qualification of a demonstrator, which prepares for series production. Rheinmetall is cooperating on the project with the Hungarian state holding company N7 Zrt., which also has a 49% stake in the Rheinmetall Hungary joint venture.

“We are pleased that we can once again set a milestone in the next generation of combat vehicles with Hungary,” said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. He praised the Panther KF51 as the “most modern battle tank in the world,” which sets new standards for the combat effectiveness of mechanized units and offers a high level of future viability.

Rheinmetall presented the concept to the world public for the first time at the Eurosatory trade fair in 2022. In contrast to the system demonstrator shown at the trade fair in Paris, the Panther KF51 EVO will carry the proven 120 mm Rheinmetall L55A1 smoothbore cannon, which is also installed in the latest Leopard 2 variants. This is intended to ensure logistical parity with the Hungarian Leopard 2 fleet.
