Sanjay Singh elected as the new president of Wrestling Association of India, Sakshi Malik announces retirement

The Wrestling Association of India’s Executive Exam took place recently and Sanjay Singh, the vice president of the Uttar Pradesh State Association, was elected as the new president by receiving 40 votes. The former player Anita Sheoran who contested against him received only 7 votes. Sanjay Singh, a supporter of Brij Bhushan Charan Singh, the ex-leader who is facing sexual allegations, has won the support of 13 out of the 15 administrators’ elections.

This news comes as a shock to Indian wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat who have been protesting against Brij Bhushan Charan Singh for sexual allegations. Leading player Bajrang Punia also participated in the protest in support of them. Following a court order to register a case against Brij Bhushan Charan Singh, he lost his post. During the protest, Brij Bhushan Charan Singh’s supporters, including Sakshi Malik, demanded that they should not contest the elections. This request was accepted by Union Sports Minister, Atumrak Thakur.

With Sanjay Singh’s election as the president of the Indian Wrestling Association, Sakshi Malik has announced her retirement from wrestling. In an emotional statement, she expressed her disappointment by saying, “We fought from our hearts, but Brij Bhushan’s business partner and close aide Sanjay Singh has been chosen as the leader. With this, I am retiring from wrestling. We wanted a woman to be the leader. But that didn’t happen.”

It remains to be seen what impact this election will have on the future of Indian wrestling and the ongoing efforts to address sexual misconduct within the sport.
