More diversity of styles and above all, a bit more adult themes, such as death, sexuality, illness or frustrations, are the characteristic features of sixth work of the Xiulas, one of the reference groups in the country’s family scene. It is about Babynova, an album that recounts the group’s desire to create an artificial life, a tailor-made baby, to visualize everything they desire and that excites them, through fourteen new songs that will present for the first time live on Saturday, December 30 atGirona Auditorium.
If in your previous work, Parental Lack of Controlthey talked about what happens to adults when their children arrive, now the Xiulas recover the child’s gaze to invite them to reflect on how a new life can be created and in which world they would have to live.

“We start from ideas like the myth of Frankenstein or the story of Pinocchio to raise the idea of creating a being from scratch and like this can be turned against you, because this generates many reflections that are not easy and that we had not touched until now», explains singer Jan Garrido, one of the members of the band, who is also a social educator. In this sense, he emphasizes that Babynova is the “most mature of the group” work in terms of content, “because it is not strictly for children and some lyrics must be thought of with parents”.
The fact that several members of the quartet work in the field of pedagogy and social education, their own experiences as parents and the advice of multiple professionals have served them to widen the focus, he explains, and approach issues new
“The audience grows with Xiula and so do we, we sing more and more about what interests us”, points out Garrido, and gives the example of the song, My body is minededicated to the prevention of sexual abuse or I love myself enoughabout the discovery of one’s own body and self-exploration.
“Childhood sexuality and especially abuse was an issue that we had a lot to deal with and that we did not dare to dobut we ended up asking for the collaboration of psychologists, sexologists and professionals from organizations like Vicky Bernardet who have helped us a lot”, he explains.
“We are at a point where we make the music we like and want to make, without going for the easiest thing”, he continues, and points out that this also translates into more diversity of styles and productions “more risky, not so easy on the listener’s ear”.
Xiula is not a group that is defined by a specific musical style, because depending on the content of each song they approach it from one or the other, often adding collaborations.
On this disc, for example, have collaborated with artists such as El Pony Pisador or Joan Garriga, who has put the voice and accordion to Sad and sunny, a song that arose from a weekend the group shared with a group of ten families who have suffered significant losses. This meeting resulted in a short film of the same name awarded with the prize for the best national short at the last In-Edit festival.
Together with Los Manolos and Maruja Limón, they have dared with a rumbera sauce to talk about discomfort and illness in bad bad and, with Helena Miquel, they have touched on the separation of the parents with airs of Spanish music from the 80s, explains Garrido. “We have no musical limits, we go where creation takes us”, he continues.
Garrido says that some of these collaborators will be present at the album presentation concerts, but above all, which will prevail in appointments such as the one on Saturday at the Girona Auditorium it will be a very aseptic staging related to the discovery of a box with the tools to create a new life, tying in with the whole concept of Babynova.
“This kit and projections with artificial intelligence that refer to science and a dystopian future will be the excuse to talk about the creation of life and denounce the world we live in”, he says.
