But the main thing that is common to all of them is thoughtfulness, decency, which is a very beautiful thing. The decency of a soldier, internal readiness to obey orders are important virtues of an Armenian soldier.
– For our general society and soldiers, your songs written for films are more dear and well-known: “We are, our mountains”, “Tango of our childhood”, “Autumn sun”, “A piece of sky”. How were those motives born? I ask.
– I worked with the director of the film, Henrik Malyan, on the film “We Are Our Mountains” before “A Piece of Sky”. By the way, in the same year, I also wrote the music for the film “The Color of Pomegranate” by Sergey Parajanov. Since then, I have been impressed by Henrik Malyan’s, so to speak, non-interference style of work. When it came time to write the music for the film “A Piece of Sky”, and the film is quite multi-layered, I was waiting for him to say something: a desire, a style preference. And he was silent. Then I should have understood that putting myself in that situation, putting myself in the area of questions, was done specifically to get full creative freedom. One sentence only told me. “Let it not be a symphony.” Under it, he understood a certain aesthetic. simple, understandable motifs that would touch people’s hearts. The film had already been shot, the editing was done by Henrik Malyan’s wife, and she was unhappy with the finale.
Do you remember the scene when Torik puts Angel in a carriage and declares, “My wife’s going to the bathroom?” In his opinion, that image was not obtained. He was complaining and we were busy putting the music under the picture. The one who put on the music… immediately the dissatisfaction disappeared, – the maestro laughs happily, – everything fell into place. There were many unusual coincidences during the making of that film. There was a very unusual coincidence with the image of Torik’s actor, Ashot Adamyan, spreading his arms, opening his mouth and screaming in the carriage. In the placement of the music, the trumpet reached its peak as Torik screamed with his arms outstretched, making it sound like he was shouting with the sound of the trumpet. At first, Malyan thought that this match might sound artificial, we tried to move it, but then we realized that it was very good, and it stayed like that.”
