The Ukrainian army needs hundreds of thousands of men and women in its ranks. But how do we mobilize more people for a task that can obviously cost lives, all in a democratic society?
On Wednesday, December 27, Colonel Yevhen Mejevikin, a respected officer, stated that if Ukraine did not mobilize enough people, it would simply risk military defeat before the end of 2024.
He called for a boost comparable to the start of the war, in 2022. Colonel Mejevikin said he understood the population’s fears about military involvement, and that the challenge was for the government to gain the public’s trust by telling the truth.
The bill remains unclear
However, Zelensky’s government is doing exactly the opposite, presenting in Parliament on December 25, during the Christmas period, a bill that modifies the conditions of compulsory military service, in order to avoid any public debate.
The bill is not available in full on the Rada website. He briefly mentions the idea of reducing the recruitment age from 27 to 25, abolishing recruitment offices and sending mobilization letters by email.
The issue of women’s mobilization remains unclear. And although Defense Minister Rustem Umerov last week mentioned the mobilization of Ukrainians abroad, the government’s press attachés pushed back, sending contradictory signals.
The Ukrainian press states that the president’s party, Servant of the People, has asked all its deputies not to comment in the media on the mobilization law and to refer all questions to the military command.
