Scientists from the University of Innsbruck: brisk walking helps overcome the urge to smoke

Scientists from the University of Innsbruck concluded that brisk walking reduces the desire to smoke, thereby helping to quit the bad habit.

Psychologists, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, invited 18 volunteers who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day for two years and had no contraindications to moderate physical activity. Some participants walked on a treadmill for ten minutes, others walked outdoors at a pace as if they were late for a meeting but didn’t want to get out of breath, and others sat quietly.

When assessing the strength of the desire to smoke, participants in the third group gave a higher score.
