A female voice is heard: “Welcome to the acoustic processing and recycling plant. » Then the stage of the 13th Art, a Parisian performance hall, is lit, revealing in the background two large fans with large blades which rotate slowly. Four workers arrive, in work clothes. From different tools, bins and industrial containers, a supermarket trolley, plastic bottles, tubes, many everyday objects, they will make percussion instruments leading, depending on the sequences, towards a rhythmic or melodic approach.
Created in 2021 by the Spanish troupe Trash! Company, the show Trash ! combines musical prowess and humor, with occasional poetic moments. And an ecological message, without slogan or declaration, which shows that waste can have a new life, here artistic. At the head of the team, who discovers their future instruments during their sorting, a chef. He gives instructions to his sometimes dissipated comrades, one of whom is rather airheaded and blundering. Between them, they express themselves using onomatopoeia, in a manner of Esperanto whose sounds also have a musical nature, supported by explanatory gestures.

Rhythmic frenzy
Hold ! cans, from which umbrellas are made! Open, closed, the end of the mast hit the ground, and here is a military march. Then metal tool boxes with flaps, which will be used to develop the rhythmic frenzy of a Brazilian samba. From a bicycle bell, a roll of tape and a ratchet wrench, let’s draw the rhythmic pattern of the song Stand by Me.
They are also gas cylinders which, through cutouts at the top, allow you to create different notes, a beautiful sequence evocative of the gongs of the Indonesian gamelan. Or striking, with plastic bottles, at different places on a metal cart to create a melody with sounds close to those of the vibraphone, minus the resonance. Between two sequences, the time to move from one object-instrument to another, electronic music prolongs an industrial atmosphere.
We are often amazed by the virtuosity of the four performers (Gorka Gonzalez, Bruno Alves, Miguel Angel Pareja, Frank Mark, and alternately Felipe Dueñas), the precision of the gestures and choreography – the exchanges with basketballs are astonishing . The use of parts of the body, hands, chest, thighs, feet, adds to the rhythmic combinations. Laughter is also involved. By facial expressions, false failures, the orders given by the leader, the reactions of his comrades, sometimes a sound, a movement. The combination of humor and music, especially in the absence of words, is often delicate. It is carried out here accurately, without going too far into exaggeration.
