Reliance Jio Seeks Approval to Launch Satellite-Based Internet Service, JioSpaceFiber

Reliance Jio, the country’s largest private telecom company, is seeking permission to launch a new satellite-based internet project called JioSpaceFiber. This move comes as other projects like Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper are making headway in the market, offering uninterrupted internet service through satellite technology.

Reports indicate that Jio’s upcoming satellite-based gigabit fiber service is expected to be the first of its kind in India. The company has submitted all necessary documents to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) and is awaiting approval.

Last year, Jio showcased its ‘Satcom’ technology-based satellite internet service at the Indian Mobile Congress 2023 event and has been testing the service at four remote locations in India. The company has also tied up with Luxembourg-based satellite telecom service provider Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) to provide satellite-based internet services in the country.

Jio’s satcom services are expected to directly compete with other players like Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. While the launch date for these services in India is yet to be announced, it is expected that Jio’s initiative may lead to increased competition in the market.

If approved, JioSpaceFiber will offer high-speed satellite internet services, providing a new option for internet connectivity in the country. Stay tuned for further updates as the company awaits the necessary approvals to launch its satcom services in India.
