The president’s government Javier Mileyyes Argentinasent to the Congress the text of an Urgent Necessity Decree (DNU). The measures had already been announced on December 20th. Because it is long, the text is known as a “decree”.

The rules, which change 350 standards in different areas, came into force on December 21st.

Milei’s strategy?

According to Argentine media, Milei may use Congressional procedures to try to prevent the text from being voted on by deputies and senators.

When this happens, the DNU comes into force even without the approval of the Legislature.

According to the newspaper The nationthis strategy was used by the previous president, Alberto Fernández, during his term.

However, Argentine press outlets claim that the president’s allies are also considering the possibility of trying to approve the “decree” as there are several legal actions questioning the constitutionality of the text.

Caution

The Argentine Labor Court determined, on Thursday, the 4th, a second precautionary measure that invalidates the labor chapter of Milei’s decree, which among 300 other modifications, introduces a reform criticized by unions and left-wing parties.

The decision by the Labor Appeals Chamber refers to an action filed by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the country’s main workers’ union, against the DNU, which came into force last week.

Milei stated that she is aware that part of the population is against many of the decisions taken by the government, but that “doing nothing or doing the same thing we have been doing would be infinitely worse”.

“I don’t want an Argentina with 98% poor and half destitute,” he said. He said that the government works “to avoid the crisis” and is “succeeding”.
