The Pope made these statements after explaining that in his prayers he uses images of the Gospel, thinking of God as the merciful father who receives, without letting him speak, the prodigal son who has squandered his fortune and who was on bad paths.

“I like to think of the Lord with this hug, when I go and tell him: ‘but I have failed in this.’ I like to think about it, with his hand doing like that and he tells me: ‘but keep going, keep going, keep going.’ The Lord who encourages us to move forward, who is not scandalized by our sins because he is a father and accompanies us,” he continued.

“The ‘problem’ is His: whether I accompany the sinner or send him straight to hell. And He chooses to accompany us. And that is why he has sent his Son, to accompany us (…) he sent his Son to the world not to condemn it but to save it,” Pope Francis stressed.
