Potato production in Diyala has doubled, reviving local markets

/ Diyala Governorate announced, on Thursday, an increase in production of the potato crop for the current season and distinct varieties, confirming the recovery of local markets with the product.

Diyala Agriculture Media Director, Muhammad Jabbar Al-Mandalawi, told Agency that potato production for the current season, although not finished yet, has exceeded 10,500 tons after expanding the cultivation of the crop from about 1,000 dunums to more than 1,500 dunums, while last season’s production reached more than 5,500 tons.

He stated that the rise and recovery of potato production had a positive impact on the local markets after the production of distinct varieties of the crop, including (Lady Rosetta), which is popular with companies that produce food products such as chips and other food chips, noting that production companies have contracted with potato farms to buy the crop.

He continued that the second variety of potatoes (Arizona) is used in the family table, confirming the high demand for it in the local markets.

Al-Mandalawi explained that potato production areas were concentrated in fertile areas and lands between Al-Khalis district and Al-Azim district due to the abundance of water and the elements for the success of its cultivation, in addition to the use of modern irrigation techniques (drip).
