Sajnay Leela Bhansali is a director who has made a mark in the Bollywood film industry through different production methods. ‘Heeramondi – The Diamond Bazaar’ is the first series of the director, who is known for his successful big budget films, for Netflix. Starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Richa Chadha and Sanjeeda Sheikh in lead roles, Sajnay Leela Bhansali is gearing up for her first foray into the OTT platform.
Gangubhai Katyavadi was the director’s last film. The film won several awards and was praised for its acting and direction. Similar to India’s famous Kamathipuram Sex Worker story, the story of sex workers is offered in the context of pre-independence India.
The plot of the series is based on the famous Heeramondi Diamond Market in Lahore. The area, which was a cultural hub during Mughal rule, became a center of prostitution during British colonial rule. Set in the tumultuous freedom struggle of the 1940s, the series also brings to the fore the personal and political complexities between sex workers and clients.
The director says the series, which has been in the works for 14 years, is a major milestone for him as a filmmaker. The first look posters reveal that the director has not made any compromises in the making of the series. According to reports, Heeramandi is being built at a cost of around 200 crores. Also, the report indicates that the director is getting Rs 60-65 crore as talent in the film.
Fans are hoping to see the director’s signature style of production and visuals on the digital platform. The series will begin streaming on Netflix soon.
