Sharjah, United Arab Emirates – The Middle East Watch and Jewelry Exhibition, currently taking place in the emirate of Sharjah, includes an extraordinary raw emerald (barakat) stone, defined as the largest in the world.

The stone, called the “Prince Kapobo”, is estimated to be worth about 2 million dollars and weighs 3.9 kilograms. Its size is 19,000 carats and it was mined in a mine located in Zambia, in the Kapobo region, where it got its name. The emerald is called “The jewel of kings”, and is attributed to fertility and rebirth. In India it is believed that wearing a ring decorated with an emerald stone on the little finger brings prosperity.

Zambia ranks as the second largest producer of emeralds in the world after Colombia. Emeralds from Zambia are known for their deeper and more saturated color compared to Colombian emeralds. They also have high purity, which makes them ideal gems for use in jewelry design.

The Middle East Watch and Jewelery Show is a semi-annual event, and the 53rd show opened on January 31st and will run until February 4th (tomorrow). The exhibition brings together over 500 exhibitors in an area of 30,000 square meters, and the number of visitors is expected to exceed 66,000 from 52 different nationalities. It includes a variety of activities, including a jewelry design competition as well as an area dedicated to displaying a large collection of emeralds of enormous sizes.
