Former adviser to the caretaker government, president of the road safety alliance, economist Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman said that it is important to establish good governance on roads to reduce road accidents and loss of life in the country. Apart from creating a comprehensive databank of road accidents, there should be transparency and accountability of the financial assistance fund for the victims.

He said this in the speech of the chief guest at a discussion on ‘We want a complete data bank of road accidents from primary sources as a government initiative to achieve the goals of SDG’ organized by Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association at Dhaka Reports Unity on Sunday (February 11).

Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman said that the government is primarily responsible for preventing road accidents but is not the sole responsible. Therefore, the desired results would be obtained if all the public and private sectors were to work together.

He said, our road infrastructure is expanding, cars are increasing, but the issue of road safety is always neglected.

It is said that 28,000 people have been killed in Gaza in Palestine so far. According to the report of the World Health Organization, 31 thousand 578 people die annually in road accidents in the country. So far 58 thousand have been injured in this war. Two and a half to three lakh people are injured in road accidents in the country. Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samiti demands to start a complete databank of road accidents from the primary source under BRTA as a government initiative to achieve SDG goals by reducing such terrible epidemic road accidents, loss of life and damage.

Secretary General of Passenger Welfare Association Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, public transport expert Abdul Haque, journalist Harun Or Rashid, journalist Manjurul Alam Panna and others also spoke in the discussion meeting.
