The researchers of Levon Orbelu Institute of Physiology of RA NAS have discovered in animal models the neuroprotective effect of Galantamine on the dynamic activity of individual neurons in conditions of diabetic dementia. This was reported by the science publicity and public relations department of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Galantamine (Nivaline, Sopharma, Bulgaria) is a drug used in Alzheimer’s disease and a number of other diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, neuritis, polyneuritis, sciatica, disorders of cerebral circulation.

“The obtained data have expanded the therapeutic targets of Galantamine,” said the head of the scientific group, head of the Institute’s Neurotransmitting Relations Laboratory, Doctor of Biological Sciences Vergine Chavushyan-Papyan. He noted that in the last decade, the number of diabetes patients who simultaneously have cardiovascular and memory problems has increased. Recent World Health Organization guidelines recommend reducing daily sugar calories, and recent scientific reports have identified fructose as a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.

The results of the research are presented in Chavushyan VA, Simonyan KV, Danielyan MH, Avetisyan LG, Darbinyan LV, Isoyan AS, Lorikyan AG, Hovhannisyan LE, Babakhanyan MA, Sukiasyan LM. Pathology and prevention of brain microvascular and neuronal dysfunction induced by a high-fructose diet in rats” published in the journal “Metab Brain Dis” (Metab Brain Dis 2023 Jan; v. 38, N1: 269-286. doi: 10.1007 /s11011-022-01098-y).

The research was carried out with the basic funding of the institute.
