The Central Government has stated in Parliament that the environmental permit will be issued only if the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Government of Karnataka reach a smooth conclusion on the Megha Dadu Dam issue.

The Central Government has said that the environmental clearance for the Megha Dadu Dam project across the Cauvery will be granted only after a smooth settlement between the two states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The Karnataka MP asked whether the Megha Dadu Dam had been given an environmental clearance and if not, the reasons for it should be stated. In a written reply to a question raised by Prajwal Revanna, Union Environment Minister Aswini Kumar Chaubey said that Karnataka’s recommendation had been considered by an appraisal panel set up by the Union Ministry and that after lengthy consultations, Karnataka could be granted an environmental permit only if it reached an agreement with Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government has continued to oppose the construction of a new dam across the Cauvery in the Megha Dadu area as it would severely affect Tamil Nadu delta farmers.

It may be recalled that during the corona curfew in Karnataka last January, a large-scale march was held on behalf of the Congress party urging the speedy construction of the Megha Dadu Dam.
