Ukrainian customs authorities specializing in the trade of energy raw materials have begun inspections of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced in the EU by blending components, due to concerns that some of it may come from Russia, Reuters reported.

Ukraine has banned imports of products made in Russia since the 2022 invasion.

“In case of receiving information about goods produced by simple mixing, the components of which come from the aggressor country Russia, such goods will be prohibited for import into Ukraine,” the customs agency announced on Facebook.

Ukraine imported significant quantities of LNG from Russia until 2022, but after the attack switched to fuels of mainly European origin.

However, according to analysts, some European traders are supplying Ukraine with gas that is partly of Russian origin, and the share of such gas in February was about 50 percent.

Analysts point out that a large amount of LNG comes from Poland, which is also a major importer of Russian fuels.

Growth in seaborne LNG imports to Poland has slowed to 7 percent in 2023, reaching 1.084 million metric tons, after jumping more than 70 percent in 2022, according to traders and the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG).

Poland also remains the main destination for Russian LNG. According to the Polish Liquefied Gas Association (POGP), the share of Russian gas in the total quantities imported into Poland was more than 50 percent, or 1.288 million tons, in the first half of 2023, writes BTA.
