António Pacheco, former Benfica and Sporting player, is brain dead

by time news

The health condition of former player António Pacheco has worsened in the last few hours. The newspaper O Jogo reported on Saturday night that the former Portuguese international is brain dead, after the cardiac arrest he suffered in recent days.

Last Tuesday, António Pacheco felt unwell during a bowling game in Portimão and ended up losing consciousness. After resuscitation maneuvers were carried out, he ended up being transported using a helicopter to Faro Hospital.

António Pacheco has been hospitalized with a poor prognosis for the last few days. However, the health situation of the former player, who was ventilated, worsened and brain death was declared. Given this clinical picture, it was decided that the former player would be transported to Portimão Hospital, where he is from. The former Benfica and Sporting player will remain hospitalized in this hospital unit until his closest family members have the opportunity to say goodbye.

Meanwhile, and through social media, Matilde Pacheco, daughter of António Pacheco, left a thank you for all the messages that the family has received in recent days, implying that her father’s situation is irreversible.

“My father António Pacheco is in a very serious situation and in an irreversible state, but he is still alive. I appreciate the messages of comfort, but now what my family really needs is peace of mind. When and if there is a death to be announced, it will be done by us”, can be read in the post made on Facebook.

The former striker completed his training at Portimonense and Torralta, before making the ‘jump’ to Benfica in 1987, where he remained until 1993, scoring 48 goals after 220 official games.

It was precisely in that year that he starred in the much-hyped ‘Hot Summer’ of Portuguese football, moving to Sporting, in the company of Paulo Sousa, following a ‘litigious divorce’ with the Reds.

After leaving the Lions, Pacheco also played for Belenenses, Reggiana, Santa Clara, Estoril and Atlético, the club with which he ended his career in 2001.
