Chess connoisseur Andrei Terekhov recently wrote the article “The Miracle of Armenian Chess”, in which he wrote:

“The Armenian national team is the leader in the number of victories in the world chess Olympiads in the 21st century. Armenian chess players won gold medals three times: in 2006, 2008 and 2012.

In 2022, even after leader Levon Aronian left the team, they scored equal points with the Uzbekistan team and won silver medals at the Olympics.

In the article, Terekhov tells how a country with a population of only 3 million was able to achieve such success.

“Armenia is perhaps the most chess-playing country in the world and is one of the few countries that has made chess lessons compulsory in schools. There are not many mere chess players in Armenia, but many excellent chess players.

In 2020, Armenia was the 6th in the world, based on the average rating of the top ten chess players.

How did chess become so popular in this small country with a population of only 3 million,” wrote the chess historian and made observations about the secret of the ancient people’s chess miracle, going back to the very beginning of Armenian history.
