Through an office order issued by the Bangladesh Weaving Board, an institution under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, on March 27, the ad hoc management committee formed to manage the Bangladesh National Weavers Association has been cancelled.

This information was informed in a press release sent by the Ministry of Textiles and Jute on Monday.

When reports were recently published in the media about illegal appointment of the committee, various corruption and irregularities against the committee members, the Minister of Textiles and Jute, Freedom Fighter, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak ordered to look into the matter and take necessary measures. In this context, the ad hoc committee was cancelled.

According to the provisions of Article 22(d) of the National Weavers Association Rules-1991, if the election is not held on time and the new management committee is not formed, the chairman of the Bangladesh Weaving Board can appoint an ad hoc committee for a specific period. Accordingly, on 20 December 2021, the Chairman of Bangladesh Textile Board constituted an ad hoc committee for two years. But elections were not held within two years. In addition, the tenure of the ad hoc committee was extended by two years through an office order dated 6 July 2023. The common weavers and grassroots weavers leaders became angry.

The aggrieved weavers requested Jahangir Kabir Nanak to take action after taking charge as Minister of Textiles and Jute in January this year. The minister ordered to look into the matter and take necessary measures. Taking the matter into consideration, the ad-hoc management committee of the Bangladesh Weaving Board Association canceled it.
