Mass cutting of trees is taking place in a number of streets of Yerevan. Tree cutting in Tumanyan, Moskovyan, Sayat-Nova, Moskovyan, Amiryan, Alek Manukyan and other streets is carried out within the framework of the project “Replacement of trees near the end of their viability and completely deformed with valuable and beautiful trees in the Yerevan community”. However, experts warn that even healthy trees are cut down, which is vandalism.
In a conversation with 168.am, environmentalist Silva Adamyan described this mass cutting of trees as ecocide.
“Researchers have studied all that, we have a volunteer group, which includes specialists, led by the famous specialist Kristina Vardanyan. We regularly see that healthy trees are cut, and on the side, sick trees.
It is obvious to me here that this is connected with corruption risks. A lot of money was invested to bring those trees: the Judas tree, the cherry tree, etc., they have small leaves, they are small trees and have absolutely nothing to do with the conditions of Yerevan.
They say that we renew the trees, but they do renewal in a different way, there are books, at least let them open them and study them. Of course, we are not against cutting down unhealthy trees, but instead, they should plant trees that are suitable for our climate. This is mass cutting, and we are not afraid to call it ecocide, it is a terrible situation, indescribable,” said Silva Adamyan.
According to the environmentalist, an eco-patrol service has been established in Armenia. However, this service, which is called to go after the raised alarms in such cases, does not go.
“I wrote on the page of Ecopareks that they are busy with foreign grants for environmental problems. Nothing is written there, the Inspection Body at least addresses the problems, but these are not in the case. So, we have a useless service, whose employees receive money from the state budget at the expense of citizens’ taxes, in order to do absolutely useless work. That service does not raise all the problems pointed out not only by the public, but also by scientific circles.
The director of the Institute of Botany has already said that they did not take any serious scientific reasoning from them, we should also talk to individual scientists who expressed their disagreement regarding the mass cutting of trees.
Let them publish the list of environmentalists who agreed to these massive tree cuttings,” emphasized Silva Adamyan.
According to the environmentalist, one of the scientists was included in the scientific and technical group of the municipality. They convinced him that they would do everything properly, they presented papers.
“I don’t want to give the name of that scientist, but he told me in a conversation that he regrets that he signed those papers, and he also said that they didn’t see scientific justification in that whole process.
Now it is not surprising to me that the relevant bodies do not raise a voice, I already said: I see the tail of corruption risks, this is connected with big money, they are silent because they are their people, they want to take it all themselves. It is a problem of money laundering, maybe this seems political, but this is always compared to our political situation, which seems to be turning Yerevan upside down. What is happening to our country, this is also a psychological pressure on the Armenian people, on the people of Yerevan. It is such a moral and psychological state that people no longer even understand what is happening around them. Yes, all this is ecocide-genocide, this is how I evaluate the work of this government,” concluded Silva Adamyan.
