The United States, Britain and France blocked a Russian-drafted statement in the UN Security Council condemning Israel over the bombing of the Iranian embassy compound in Syria.
Diplomats told Reuters: “The United States, with support from France and Britain, informed the rest of the Council countries that many facts about what happened on Monday in Damascus are still unclear, and there was no consensus among Council members during a meeting held on Tuesday.” .
Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy delegate to the United Nations, said: “The United States and Britain refused to discuss a draft statement for the UN Security Council prepared by Russia regarding Israel’s raid on Damascus.”
Polyansky said: “At the conclusion of the UN Security Council meeting on April 2 regarding the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Russia prepared a draft statement for the UN Security Council, the text of which is traditional for such cases,” adding: “But the United States and Britain did not even want to discuss it. Pointing out that during the meeting there was no consensus in assessing what happened.”
Polyansky pointed out, “Washington, London, and Paris did not condemn this blatant violation of international law, but rather began a verbal evasion, from which it was possible to conclude that Iran itself bears responsibility for this.”
He added: “This serves as a striking example of the double standards used by the Western “troika” and its approach to adhering to law and order in the international context.”
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the killing of the two generals, advisors, Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their companions in the recent Israeli bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
