The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 11th (local time) that there were predictions that Iran would attack mainland Israel within 48 hours in retaliation for the attack on its consulate in Syria.
According to a WSJ report, a U.S. government source said on this day, “Iran is preparing attacks targeting southern and northern Israel within 24 to 48 hours.”
A source who heard about the Iranian leadership’s policy said plans to attack Israel are being discussed, but no final decision has been made.
A U.S. official familiar with the matter said U.S. intelligence reports indicate that Iranian retaliation could occur within days and that Israeli territory could be targeted.
Accordingly, the U.S. Embassy in Israel banned travel by U.S. government employees and their families residing in Israel, and the U.S. military dispatched Commander Michael Eric Kurilla of the U.S. Central Command to Israel.
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said, “We are on alert for a variety of scenarios,” and added, “The Israeli military is communicating with the commander of Kurilla in various ways to prepare for Iranian attacks and defenses.”
Previously, the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria that occurred on the 1st killed senior officials, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the commander in charge of Lebanon and Syria of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s (IRGC) elite Quds Force.
Israel has never stated that it was responsible for this attack, but Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and others have pointed to Israel as the mastermind behind the bombing and have pledged revenge. On the 10th, Khamenei said to Israel, “They must be punished and they will be punished.”
A White House spokesman declined to comment on Iran’s message, but said Washington had communicated with Tehran to say it was not involved in the attack. The United States is said to have asked China and others to persuade Iran not to launch a retaliatory attack.
It is still unclear whether Iran’s retaliatory military operation will actually be carried out and at what level it will be carried out. Previously, Reuters, citing Iranian sources, reported that Iran had conveyed its position to the United States that it would respond in a way that would not escalate tensions and would not rush to retaliate.
