One person was killed and ten were injured after a cable car collided with a pole. As a result, the cabin door opened and the passengers fell to the ground.
According to reports in the local media, the incident took place yesterday (Friday) at around 18:00 (Turkey time) at the “Tunkatepa” railway facility in the popular tourist city of Antalya, which takes tourists from Konyaalti Beach to a restaurant and observation point at the peak at a height of 618 meters (2027 feet). It takes about nine minutes from end to end, according to the cable car operator’s website.
As mentioned, one person was killed in the incident and another ten were injured, including two children. All the injured were taken to the hospitals with varying degrees of injury.
The investigation of the incident shows that the cable car stopped in the middle with 24 cabins hanging in the air, leaving 184 passengers stuck at a high altitude. Helicopters, mountain rescue teams and 160 emergency personnel were involved in the evacuation, which continued into the night.
The mayor of Antalya, Mohitin Bucek, said this morning at 07:00 that at least 96 people were rescued from 15 cable car compartments, while efforts continue to rescue the remaining people stuck in nine more compartments.
The local authorities identified the victim who was killed as a Turkish national named Memish Gomush.
The cable car system is operated by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and a legal investigation has been opened by the Antalya General Prosecutor’s Office to examine the cause of the shocking accident. The crash occurred on the last day of the three-day Eid al-Fitr public holiday in Turkey – which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan when families flock to resorts and beaches.
