During the opening of the European Heavyweight Championship, Karen Giloyan, the deputy minister of the Republic of Armenia, referred to the developments following the burning of the Azerbaijani flag in a conversation with “Armenpress”. In particular, he referred to the decision to return the Azerbaijani delegation.
“The decision on the return of the collective was made in Azerbaijan. I personally talked with the representatives of the delegation, they were not dissatisfied with anything. The head of the delegation, the coaches unanimously said that they are flattered, they feel good, they have no problem with the danger. They just received an order and cannot disobey the order, they must return. This is just an excuse. The Republic of Armenia has ensured and will ensure everyone’s safety,” Giloyan said.
According to Karen Giloyan, the incident was used to cast a shadow over the course of the championship.
“Yes, the incident is unsportsmanlike and a sad fact. But they understand that the act was just done by a person, not a state attitude. Now we are trying to alleviate the situation. If yesterday the probability of holding next year’s world championship in Armenia was high, today it has decreased quite a bit,” Giloyan said.
To remind, the Azerbaijanis, who stopped their participation in the European weightlifting championship in Yerevan, have already left the territory of Armenia. They have reached Tbilisi, from where they will fly to Baku.
