The presidents of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were satisfied with the pace of normalization of relations, both economically and in the settlement of conflicts, which includes, of course, the Syrian one.

We are very happy that our relations are being restored at a fairly rapid pace“Putin said at the beginning of talks with Erdogan in the Kremlin.

Putin stressed that both countries “are actively working on solving the most acute crises in the world, with Syria being a priority.” “I am very pleased to highlight, and it is something that apparently no one expected, that close and very effective contact is being established at the military and secret service level.“, he pointed.

Economic relations

For his part, Erdogan alluded to joint projects, such as the case of the first Turkish nuclear power plant in Akkuyu and the Turk Stream gas pipeline.

Moscow and Ankara signed an agreement in 2010 for the construction of said nuclear power plant in Turkey and, according to the Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom, The start of operation of the first Akkuyu reactor is scheduled for April 2023.

Meanwhile, the Turk Stream project, whose agreement was ratified by the Parliaments of both countries, foresees the construction of a gas pipeline to carry fuel across the Black Sea to the border between Turkey and Greece, where a distribution center would be created for the countries of the European Union.

In addition, Erdogan announced that he will discuss economic, commercial, energy and military industry issues with Putin this Friday.

According to official Turkish sources, The meeting in the Kremlin will discuss the possible Turkish purchase of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, the same ones that Russia deployed to protect its military bases in Syria.

On the other hand, the Kremlin reported before the meeting that the Syrian conflict, the peace negotiations between the regime and the armed opposition, and the coordination of the military actions of both countries in the Arab country will be the central points of the meeting.

Putin and Erdogan sealed peace in Saint Petersburg in August 2016 after more than half a year of stagnation in their relations due to the downing of a Russian warplane by a Turkish fighter jet on the border with Syria.
