The Russian Ministry of Transport is striving to increase the efficiency of using the North-South international transport corridor.

The Ministry of Transport reported this to Trend, Day.Az reports.

“Measures are being implemented to improve the efficiency of using the North-South international transport corridor, as well as other transport and logistics corridors in terms of developing transport infrastructure,” the Ministry of Transport said.

As the ministry noted, measures are being taken to eliminate limiting areas on the approaches to seaports, as well as to timely implement measures to develop transport infrastructure.

“Including the elimination of limiting areas on the approaches to seaports, the timely implementation of measures for the development of the railway, infrastructure of inland waterways, highways, checkpoints across the state border, increasing the capacity of seaports to ensure an increase in cargo transshipment, and as well as additional activities, including the development of transportation and logistics services,” the ministry emphasized.

Let us recall that the legal basis for the North-South transport corridor was laid on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed between Russia, Iran and India on September 12, 2000.

In total, the agreement on this corridor was ratified by 13 countries (Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Armenia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkey and Ukraine).

As previously reported by the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, the volume of freight transport by rail along the North-South corridor in 2023 amounted to 2.1 million tons, which is 4 percent more than in 2022.

It is expected that by 2027 the transport potential of the corridor will be increased from 6 to 10 million tons per year.
