New Delhi: Does BJP want to end reservation? Is the Bharatiya Janata Party raising the slogan of ‘crossing 400’ in 2024 so that it can change the Constitution? If Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh is to be believed, BJP can do this if it returns to power. He mentioned this on Sunday on the birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Sanjay Singh claimed that BJP leaders were demanding two-thirds majority so that they could change the Constitution. BJP will end reservation as soon as it comes to power. Not only Sanjay Singh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has also expressed similar apprehensions in a comment. He also said that if BJP comes to power, reservation can be abolished. However, PM Modi himself has rejected such things on many occasions. He clearly said that BJP will never abolish reservation. Home Minister Amit Shah also cleared the party’s stand regarding this. He said that reservation will not be abolished. Despite denial from PM Modi and Amit Shah, the opposition is continuously raising this issue in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In such a situation, the question is whether this can really happen and BJP can end reservation?

What did Sanjay Singh say about reservation

Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections is on 19 April. Just before this, on Ambedkar Jayanti, party workers read the Preamble of the Constitution at the AAP headquarters. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, while addressing the party workers, said that BJP wants to amend the Constitution. During this, Sanjay Singh mentioned a video of BJP MP. He said that in this video a BJP MP is openly saying that there is a need to change the Constitution written by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. BJP MPs are saying that work is not going on in 272. If the Constitution has to be changed then two-thirds majority is required, hence give maximum seats, we have to change the Constitution.

Can reservation be abolished?

Sanjay Singh said how dangerous this is. From the Aam Aadmi Party office, he bluntly said that I want to tell BJP and RSS that as long as you are workers, we will fight till our last breath to save the Constitution. We have taken this pledge and will fulfill it. It is natural to raise questions about the way Sanjay Singh made this claim. Can reservation really be abolished? This is not the first time that politics is taking place regarding reservation in India. A similar discussion started in the 2019 elections also. However, at that time PM Modi had bluntly said that his government has no intention of ending reservation.

There is no tampering in reservation – Amit Shah

In April 2019, during an election rally in Maharashtra, PM Modi had said that opposition parties were spreading rumors that there would be a change in reservation if he returned to power. He also said that he will ensure that there is no tampering in the reservation. As long as Modi is here, no one can touch the reservation given to us by Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar. As soon as this issue was raised by the opposition in the 2024 elections, Home Minister Amit Shah took the lead. On April 14 i.e. Ambedkar Jayanti, he said that BJP will never allow reservation to end nor will it allow Congress to do so. I want to make it clear that as long as BJP is in politics, we will not let anything happen to reservation.

The decision to remove reservation is not easy!

If we look at the history of reservation, it is a pre-independence system. Caste became the basis of reservation in the country because there were inequalities on the basis of caste, hence the system of caste based reservation was implemented. The report of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was accepted in the Kalelkar Commission report of 1953 on reservation. However, the OBC recommendation was rejected. OBC reservation was also implemented in the 90s and 10 percent reservation was also introduced for the poor upper castes. The purpose of reservation was to ensure the participation of every class in the field of government jobs, welfare schemes, elections and education in the center and state. However, the decision to give or remove reservation will not be easy politically. The Supreme Court had also made an important comment on this issue and said that reservation cannot be forever. There is a need to set a deadline.
