The city bus industry and hydrogen production suppliers in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province are in conflict over the burden of high-voltage battery replacement costs worth 50 million won.

According to the industry on the 22nd, six hydrogen electric city buses in the Chungju area encountered problems such as not starting after charging at the hydrogen charging station in Chungju city on November 9 last year.

Similar breakdowns occurred in nine Nexo hydrogen electric vehicles owned by the general public that were charged at the same charging station as city buses.

The hydrogen charging station supplied hydrogen received from the Chungju City Food Bioenergy Center (Center) to the malfunctioning vehicle, and it was confirmed that the hydrogen injected into the malfunctioning vehicle was defective hydrogen.

The center is producing hydrogen from food waste. It is known that the hydrogen that caused the problem contained more methane and carbon dioxide than the standard levels.

The generator in the vehicle stopped due to defective hydrogen, which led to discharge of the high-voltage battery.

However, the hydrogen production and supplier only compensated for the cost of towing the broken vehicle and replacing some parts, and is refusing to compensate for the high-voltage battery replacement cost.

An official in the city bus industry said, “Even if a discharged battery is repaired, it is difficult to expect the previous efficiency,” and added, “We asked the automobile manufacturer to replace it with a new battery, but the hydrogen production supplier is refusing to pay the cost.”

The hydrogen production and supplier countered, saying, “Defective hydrogen cannot be seen as the direct cause of the battery discharge of hydrogen city buses,” and added, “If we present technical evidence that defective hydrogen is the cause, we will be able to discuss compensation.”

One in six city buses had their batteries replaced due to charging problems after charging defective hydrogen. The hydrogen production and supplier claims that if the battery failed due to defective hydrogen, the same problem should occur in the remaining city buses as well. .

The center is Korea’s first green hydrogen production facility built with a project cost of 12.19 billion won, including national and local funds. Company S and Company C were each entrusted with the production and supply of hydrogen, but since last March, Company S has been manufacturing and supplying the hydrogen together.
