According to local media such as China’s Fengpai Newspaper on the 19th (local time), the Hong Kong Consumer Commission tested the safety of 30 types of beer sold on the market and found that Harbin beer ‘Mai Dao’ contained deoxyni, a type of mold toxin. Valenol (DON) was detected.

The toxin was not detected in 29 other beers, including Budweiser, Heineken, and Carlsberg, that were also tested.

Deoxynivalenol is one of the toxins that contaminate grains, feed, and food, and in the case of beer, it is produced by contamination with mold during the fermentation process of barley.

The amount of deoxynivalenol detected in Harbin Beer Mai Dao was 26㎍ per 1kg, which was lower than the Chinese national standard of 1000㎍/1kg.

The committee warned, “This detected amount is safe for an adult weighing 60 kg to drink 4 cans a day, but if consumed for a long time or in large amounts, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever may occur.”

When the test results were released, Harbin Beer told local media, “All products undergo rigorous testing before being released to the market. The amount of deoxynivalenol detected is much lower than the Chinese national standard, and the standard of the internationally authoritative food safety agency is “It is much lower than that,” he said.

However, it is known that neither mainland China nor Hong Kong have clear regulations on deoxynivalenol content. According to the committee, mainland Chinese and international standards only specify grain products such as barley, wheat, and oatmeal, and do not specify beer.

As consumer concerns spread, Harbin Beer announced that Mai Dao products are only produced and sold in mainland China.

Chinese netizens were angry at this explanation, saying, “This is an answer that ignores the safety of consumers in China.” They poured out criticism, saying, “I will never drink Harbin beer again” and “Why do you keep trying to deceive the mainland people?”

Meanwhile, Harbin beer is currently sold in Korean convenience stores, but it is known that Mai Dao products in which deoxynivalenol was detected are not being imported into Korea.
