Thousands of Colombians took to the streets to protest the reform agenda of leftist President Gustavo Petro.
Demonstrations took place in several cities, including the capital, where demonstrators gathered in Bolivar Square outside the presidential palace in Bogotá.
Petro floated the possibility of rewriting the Constitution to stimulate social reforms, which he was unable to advance in the face of opposition from a hostile Congress and conservative business groups.
Recently, the Colombian Congress refused to pass legislation to strengthen state control over the country’s health care system with the aim of improving and reducing the costs of medical care.
In response, Petro decreed the acquisition of two of the country’s largest medical insurance companies, on which millions of Colombians depend.
