The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has postponed the order on the contempt of court petition against seven pro-BNP lawyers on June 12.
On the day of the order, the five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the order on Wednesday (April 24) as two of the seven accused lawyers were not present.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal told the court that two lawyers could not appear on that day. He said two lawyers could not attend today due to personal reasons. One of their senior advocates, AJ Muhammad Ali, is in Singapore for treatment. Another former vice president, Advocate Fahima Nasreen Munni, is in America for treatment. Later, the Appellate Division postponed the order to June 12.
The seven BNP lawyers accused of contempt of court are – Nationalist Lawyers Forum Secretary General and Legal Affairs Secretary of BNP Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Nationalist Lawyers Forum President Former Attorney General AJ Muhammad Ali, BNP Executive Committee Member Advocate Fahima Nasreen Munni, Nationalist Lawyers Forum Supreme Court Branch President Advocate Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Former Editor of Supreme Court Bar, Advocate Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Khan, Former Co-Editor of Supreme Court Bar and General Secretary of Supreme Court Branch of Nationalist Lawyers Forum, Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal.
The Nationalist Lawyers Forum has been holding several press conferences against the two judges of the Appellate Division for their remarks referring to ‘judges as sworn politicians’ at the National Mourning Day discussion meeting held on August 15 last year. Besides, the program was announced by the forum to prevent those two judges from judging.
Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi filed a contempt of court complaint in the Supreme Court on August 29 for holding a press conference and rally against the two judges.
