The Cabinet has approved the draft Bill on Salary (Remuneration and Privileges) of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners.

The draft ‘Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, 2024’ was given final approval in the Cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday (April 17). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting. At the end of the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain said this in a press briefing.

He said that the court had directed to prepare a list of repeal of the laws which were made during the military regime. There was also a direction to translate into Bengali ‘The Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners (Remuneration and Privileges) Ordinance, 1983.

“The draft of the Bengal Act has been approved in principle in the cabinet meeting today. In that case it was presented by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. It is the Bengali version of the original English law.’

Mahbub Hossain said, ‘The main word of this law was that the privileges which the Supreme Court judges get… the Chief Election Commissioner will get a salary equal to that of a judge of the Appellate Division. And other election commissioners will get the same salary as a judge of the High Court Division. The other allowances that the judges get, they will also get that.

He said, ‘In other words, the Bengali version of the previous law has been approved in principle. No change.’

The cabinet secretary said, ‘Furthermore, in the cabinet meeting, the cabinet has been informed about the implementation of the decisions taken in the cabinet meeting in the month of January-March. The Prime Minister has instructed the cabinet to take quick decisions on the matters under implementation in the first three months of this year. Those that cannot be implemented should be reported back to the Cabinet. Then, if necessary, the decision will be changed.’
