Ecuadorian football is once again involved in controversy after the explosive revelations of the president of the Professional League of Ecuador, Miguel Ángel Loor.
The focus of the controversy centers on the accusations directed towards his counterpart in the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), Francisco Egas. Loor claimed to have personally witnessed situations that shed light on alleged maneuvers by Egas to undermine the management of the Pro League and hinder the holding of important football events in the country. One of the most serious accusations indicates that Egas had tried to sabotage the organization of the Copa Libertadores final in Guayaquil. According to Loor, an alleged condition was sent to the president of the FEF: to support Loor’s removal from his position as president of the Liga Pro in exchange for keeping the Libertadores final in Ecuador. Otherwise, he would threaten to withdraw the event from the country. These statements, if true, would call into question the integrity and ethics in the management of national football. Loor emphasized the seriousness of these accusations by stating that they go beyond the sporting sphere, hinting at possible interests outside of football that could be at stake. Furthermore, he highlighted the negative impact that the withdrawal of an event of the magnitude of the Copa Libertadores final would have for the city of Guayaquil and for the country in general, considering the investments and preparations made for its realization. Given these revelations, a response is expected from the FEF and greater clarity about the facts exposed by Loor.
