“Baby Reindeer” is number one in Netflix’s global charts, the reviews are overwhelming and the series is likely to be nominated for the important television Emmy award. “Baby Reindeer” is getting a lot of attention right now, probably much more than intended.
The massive response to the stalker story now has direct real-world consequences.
The Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” deals with a true stalker case
“Baby Reindeer” is based on the true story, starring and written by Richard Gadd. In the series he calls himself Donny Dunn and describes his relationship with a woman who pursued him for years. The storyline coincides with another incident in Gadd’s life: the comedian was repeatedly raped by an influential television writer.
All this happened more or less as depicted in the series. And that means: The people who commit the crimes in the series actually exist. The result: A large-scale digital manhunt began on the Internet for the true role models of the stalker and the rapist.

Police get involved because of fan speculation
On Monday, author Richard Gadd called out an overzealous audience on his Instagram story, including: The Hollywood Reporter reported:
“Hello. People I love, have worked with and respect (including Sean Foley) have been unfairly caught up in the speculation. That’s not the point of our series.”
It seems that the statement was intended to arrest a landslide that had started a long time ago, as happened on Tuesday. Sean Foley, played by Richard Gadd, is a theater director and comedian who has also worked in television. In terms of age and professional status, he resembles the rapist character from the series – and that was his downfall.
At X, Foley shared Richard Gadd’s call and wrote in another post:
“The police have been informed and are investigating all defamatory, abusive and threatening posts against me.”

However, the posts about the post include comments like: “They should investigate you, man.” Swarm information on the Internet can be powerful, but in this case it is based on pure speculation. And they are out of control.
The famous “Baby Reindeer” actor also warns
Fans on the Internet also “searched” for the real-life model of stalker Martha Scott, played by Jessica Gunning. Fans claim they recognized her when the real Richard Gadd appeared – by her smile.
On Wednesday, actress Jessica Gunning made the announcement Interview, in which she describes the speculation as “pretty sad”. It further emphasizes Gadd’s calls for greater reason:
«If you like the series, you should stick to the story of Martha and Donny […] and without trying to do any detective work and find out real identities.”
Searching for parallel lines in CVs, visual similarities or the like is in any case futile. In an interview with «GQ» Gadd explained that he made the true model of Martha unknown in that it was unrecognizable: “We tried really hard to hide her so she wouldn’t recognize herself.”
