First time running alone since Chung Sye-kyun in 2005
In fact, he was promoted to office due to a series of non-candidates.
171 people vote for or against on the 3rd of next month
Representative Park Chan-dae, a key member of the pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) faction, ran as the sole candidate for the next floor leader election of the Democratic Party of Korea. The Democratic Party plans to decide whether to win the election through a vote for or against in the floor leader election scheduled for the 3rd of next month. With the unprecedented solo candidacy, concerns are growing within the party that “the pro-Myung monopoly system centered on Representative Lee Jae-myung will be further solidified.”
On the 26th, the Democratic Party announced that Representative Park, who succeeded in his third term, was the sole candidate for the floor leader candidate registration, which closed at 11 a.m. that day. This is because Supreme Council member Seo Young-kyo, who was predicted to be a candidate until the previous day, as well as lawmakers Kim Min-seok, Kim Byeong-ki, and Kim Seong-hwan, as well as senior vice floor leader Park Joo-min, declared that they would not run. The Democratic Party had planned to hold a debate on floor leader candidates at the workshop for elected candidates for the 22nd general election held on the 30th, but decided to skip the debate due to Rep. Park’s sole candidacy.
It is an unusual situation for the Democratic Party floor leader to run alone. There is a precedent in 2005 when Rep. Jeong Sye-gyun, who ran as the sole candidate for the floor leader election during the Uri Party, was unanimously nominated. With the landslide victory in the April 10th general elections, the election battle was expected to be fierce as the number of lawmakers within the Democratic Party who succeeded in their third and fourth terms as floor leader reached 44. However, after Rep. Park was the first to declare his candidacy on the 21st, citing the ‘strong two-top system of Representative Lee Jae-myung and Floor Leader Park Chan-dae’, pro-Myung faction lawmakers followed with declarations that they would not run.
The Democratic Party plans to elect the floor leader through a vote for or against in the floor leader election held on the 3rd of next month. Previously, the Democratic Party’s Floor Leader Election Committee announced its policy to hold a pro/con vote even if a candidate runs alone in the floor leader election in order to reflect the majority vote principle, as it introduced a runoff voting system for the National Assembly Speaker election. Rep. Park is elected only when a majority of registered voters approve.
If the merger between the Democratic Party and the proportional satellite party, the Democratic Alliance, is completed before the floor leader election, a total of 171 people, including 161 elected members of the Democratic Party and 10 elected members of the Democratic Alliance, will participate in the floor leader election.
There is criticism within the party that if Rep. Park is elected as floor leader, “it will become a party with a pro-name reputation.” A Democratic Party official said, “From the start of the candidacy process, the atmosphere of ‘if you run, you are anti-President Lee Jae-Myung’ has spread,” and added, “Once the two-top system with Representative Lee is completed, it will be more difficult to find opposing voices.”
