Today, April 27, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, said in an interview with the French news agency AFP that Palestinian athletes will be invited to participate in the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, regardless of their qualification results.
According to him, the invitation will be extended to 6 to 8 Palestinian athletes, depending on the results of the qualifying competitions. Bach also said that the International Olympic Committee “from the first day of the conflict” in Gaza “supported athletes in various ways, allowing them to take part in qualifications and continue training.”
The committee argues that this invitation system is aimed at promoting Olympic universality and uniting peoples. The XXXIII Summer Olympic Games are scheduled for the period from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
In addition, Bach rejected the IOC’s treatment of *Russia differently in relation to its invasion of Ukraine compared to Israel and its war in the Gaza Strip. It is known that after the invasion, the Russian Federation was suspended from participation in many international sports, and its athletes were banned from competing under the national flag in Paris in 2024.
To take part in the Paris Games, they must also never publicly support the war against Ukraine and not be employed in the military or security services. The sanctions against Moscow come as a result of the Kremlin’s violation of the “Olympic truce” during its invasion of Ukraine shortly after the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, as well as the annexation of Ukrainian sports organizations.
“The situation between Israel and Palestine is completely different. From day one we expressed our horror, first on October 7th and then during the war and its horrific consequences. We have always been very clear, as we were with the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Bach said.
