We need to deepen the creation of the so-called Brand Bulgaria, said the Acting Minister of Tourism Evtim Miloshev during his visit to the ancient city of Missionis near Targovishte. In ancient times – one of the hundred tourist sites of Bulgaria, Miloshev was welcomed by Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov, the regional governor of Targovishte Gergana Tsoneva and the mayor of the municipality Darin Dimitrov, BTA reported.
The idea of the acting minister is to unite more ministries and departments in the name of cultural tourism. “Because several ministries and local municipalities are involved in the development of cultural tourism, tourism in general. This is a much larger project and should be organized in a different way. Everything is related to how the funds will be organized and how the programs will be able to work in the most efficient way,” Miloshev also said.
He was impressed by what he saw at the site and by the story about the centuries-old history of the fortress, presented to him by Prof. Ovcharov and the site’s scientific supervisor Stefan Ivanov from the team of the Regional History Museum in Targovishte.
Evtim Miloshev emphasized that he recognizes cultural tourism as his personal cause, in view of his entire biography. “I think that there are huge prerequisites for cultural tourism in Bulgaria. Secondly, this is something that is year-round and all other forms of tourism can develop around it,” the caretaker minister was categorical.
Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov recalled that the site already has a title deed. The municipality will now be able to apply for European projects.
Ovcharov once again recalled the priority sites that should serve as benchmarks in the country’s cultural tourism. The program for the priority sites was adopted in 2021, it was being worked on here and at various sites in the country, two years later it was stopped. In the new budget, about BGN 1.9 million is planned again for these five sites.” This is money outside of the regular excavations. The bad thing is that they pass them through the Ministry of Culture and we have not worked on such a system,” explained Prof. Ovcharov. He called on the caretaker minister to help move the letters to the municipalities and the excavations to start on time.
Missionis is a key site for the region, a hub between the old Bulgarian capitals. Missionis is the past of our city, but it must be the present and the future of Targovishte, Mayor Darin Dimitrov pointed out. “That’s why we are trying to do everything in our power, for nine years we have been fighting for Missionis to be given to the municipality, so that we can apply for European projects – above all, to socialize the site and improve access to it,” the mayor summarized.
During his visit to Targovishte, the official minister and his team will have a meeting with business representatives.
