The exhibition “Guardians of Memory” will be opened on April 30 in the lobby of the permanent exhibition of the History Museum (IM) “Iskra” in Kazanlak, the cultural institute announced. It is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Kazanlak Thracian tomb, notes BTA.

Included in the exhibition are 12 panels presenting the history of the study and preservation of the monument over the years, interwoven through the professional biographies of the personalities associated with it. Among the first specialists presented are the director of the museum at the opening of the tomb, Dimitar Chorbadzhiyski – Chudomir, the artist Asen Vasiliev, who took the first photographs, the archaeologist Vasil Mikov, who conducted the excavations, and the restorer Karl Yordanov, who cleaned and strengthened the frescoes.

In the following years, conservation efforts were related to the construction of a protective building over the monument and provision of suitable conditions for its preservation, according to Iskra IM. Architect Dragomir Jidrov, author of the first defensive building, and architect Dafina Vasileva, who designed the current defensive building, played an important role in this. The role of Prof. Peyo Berbenliev is exceptional. In 1966, a council of UNESCO specialists was convened on the issues of preservation of the Kazanlak Tomb. Participating scientists include Prof. Harold Plenderley, Gary Thomson, Prof. Giovanni Mazari, Prof. Paolo Mora, Dr. Hermann Kuhn, Prof. Bohdan Marconi.

The construction of an exact copy of the tomb in 1974 marks the next stage in conservation and presentation, the museum also reminds. The project is by architect Mladen Panchev, and the murals in the copy were recreated by Prof. Lyuben Prashkov, Zlatka Kojuharova and Slavi Voikov.

The photographs used in the exhibition are from the archives of Iskra Museum of Art, Chudomir Literary and Art Museum, the National Archaeological Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Central State Archives, the Department of Archeology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the personal archives of Prof. Miglena Prashkova and Petya Golemanova.

The exhibition will be open to visitors until June 30, and admission is free.

The celebration of the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Kazanlak Thracian tomb began with a performance dedicated to the life and culture of the ancient Thracians. During the year, there are many more events dedicated to Thracian culture. They will be dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Sevtus III in the Golyama Kosmatka mound. The tomb-cult complex Ostrusha, which was completely restored and socialized with the large-scale project of the local administration “World of the Thracians”, is about to be officially opened to visitors. It will welcome its first guests on April 29.
