In an effort to diversify its sources of natural gas imports, Turkey is negotiating with US oil and gas company ExxonMobil for long-term supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, the Financial Times writes about this.

According to Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Ankara expects to conclude a ten-year contract with ExxonMobil for the annual supply of 2.5 million tons of LNG.

According to Bayraktar, this step is designed to ensure the country’s energy security ahead of the expiration of long-term gas contracts with Russia in 2025 and with Iran in 2026.

“To ensure energy security, we need to get gas from somewhere. This could be Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran or LNG supplies,” explained the head of the Ministry of Energy.

Currently, about 40% of the gas consumed in Turkey is imported from Russia via pipelines. Diversification of suppliers will reduce dependence on a single source. In addition, LNG procurement will provide greater flexibility in choosing alternative routes and suppliers.
