The Ministry of Justice of the National Unity Government called on the Lebanese authorities to provide guarantees and rights to Hannibal Gaddafi, including a place of detention, health care, visits and correspondence.
In a statement, the Ministry affirmed his right to be released without any restrictions or conditions because the charge against him has not been proven, it said.
The Ministry also called on the relevant authorities in the Lebanese Republic to indicate in an official letter that the conditions of Hannibal’s detention have been improved, referring to what was reported in the media about the conditions that Hannibal is going through in the State of Lebanon in terms of his place of detention and his deprivation of the rights guaranteed by international conventions and treaties, according to the Ministry.
The Ministry confirmed communication with political parties and international and regional human rights organizations to ensure that the Lebanese authorities fulfill their responsibilities towards Hannibal Gaddafi and that he obtains his rights and freedom, according to its statement.
This comes after Lebanese channels published pictures showing where Gaddafi’s son was being held in Lebanon, and quoted his complaints about the conditions of his detention.
Last August, the Libyan Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, called on the Lebanese authorities to release Hannibal Gaddafi or hand him over to Libya, in a letter addressed to the President of the Judicial Council – the first President of the Court of Cassation, the Cassation Public Prosecutor of the Republic of Lebanon, and the Judicial Investigator, Judge Zaher Hamadeh.
In December 2015, the Lebanese Internal Security Forces, which oversees prison operations, arrested Hannibal Gaddafi, allegedly in connection with the disappearance of Musa al-Sadr and his two companions in Libya after an official visit in August 1978.
