This weekend started the Latvian championship in rugby-7 for women. On Saturday, three teams gathered at the Riga Technical College stadium for the first round, but they are the strongest women’s teams of recent years – RK “Selena”, RK “Livonia” and RK “Miesnieki”.
Last year’s vice-champions RK “Livonia/LSPA” got a new coach – the captain of the Latvian rugby-7 national team and one of the leading rugby players, Elmārs Šefanovska, who could not be present because he participated in the tournament in Šiauliai, where he won the most valuable player award. The team was also supplemented by two foreign women – players from Sweden.
In the first game, RK “Livonia” met RK “Miesnieki”. The Livonian women did not start well, so the “Miesnieki” players took the lead. However, “Livonia” ended the first half in their favor 12:10. In the second half, only the women of Livonia scored points, celebrating the victory with 22:10.
Hanna Evelina Neiland became the top scorer of the tournament with 22 points. Cindy Chirak scored 10 points as the top scorer for Livonia, but Marta Rita Venckus, who will turn 16 in August, has 5 points to her credit.
“We didn’t wake up in the first game, maybe there was some confusion. Therefore, the match did not go as we wanted. However, in the second half, the girls “woke up”, and thus the game “went on” and we won,” comments Alice Lakija Shirve, elected as the captain of RK “Livonia” this season.
In the second game, the scenario was different, that is, Livonian women started very well against last year’s champions “Selena”. “The start against Seleniets was very good. We finally scored a touchdown. We also let the young girls on the field, who played for the first time this year. It must be said that they did quite well. Overall, I’d say a very positive start to the season considering some are still not fully recovered from injuries and we have a number of new players. We are just running in,” says Alice Lakija Shirve.
“Selena” also scored against “Miessieki” by 30 points, but did not allow the opponents to score points, thus “Selena’s” “dry” victory in the game 38:0 and also the expected first place in the stage.
