For several years, scientific research has been examining the links between exposure to pollutants and certain birth defects, certain cancers or even infertility problems. In 2021, France became the first country in the world to establish a compensation fund for victims of pesticides.
At the University Hospital of Amiens, in the north, the first Consultation “Pediatric Pathologies and Pesticides” was opened last fall to examine these files. Its principle: to support parents of children – who are exposed to pesticides during pregnancy or at a young age – and who suffer from leukaemia, brain tumors or birth defects. Since the opening of this consultation, approximately thirty patients have been seen.
These are often the children of farmers or green space workers, who have little or no knowledge of the harmful health effects of these plant protection products. Elsewhere in France, at the Bordeaux University Hospital, medical staff perform preventative measures with young mothers and couples who have difficulty conceiving. The aim is to make these parents or future parents aware of the dangers of exposure to chemicals or pesticides, and, more broadly, to give them the keys to all environmental risks in their lives minimize daily.
How can we prevent possible pathologies, when it is very difficult to establish a cause and effect link, in the context of environmental exposure? Why are health professionals grappling with this issue and what are the difficulties they face?
