Emergency meeting of OIC MAEs to examine the recurrence of incidents of desecration and burning of the Holy Quran

This emergency ministerial meeting comes in implementation of the contents of the Final Declaration issued by the extraordinary open-ended meeting of the OIC Executive Committee, held on July 2 at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the organization in Jeddah, concerning the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in Sweden, which called for an emergency high-level meeting if necessary.

It also comes in light of the consultations held by the OIC Secretary General, Hussain Ibrahim Taha, with Member States regarding the consideration of additional measures in response to the repetition of such provocative acts which represent a deliberate manifestation of hatred and intolerance.

In a speech at the opening of the meeting, Mr. Taha reiterated his call to the Swedish and Danish authorities to take measures, at the official level, to prevent the recurrence of the desecration and burning of copies of the Saint. Quran, expressing disappointment that no action has been taken in this regard so far.

It also recommended that the member states of the organization take the sovereign measures they deem appropriate in their relations with Sweden and Denmark, in order to express their rejection of the position of the two countries regarding the repeated attack on the sanctity of the Noble Quran and to prevent the repetition of these actions which can have dangerous repercussions, while considerable efforts are made to disseminate the values ​​of tolerance, moderation, mutual respect and understanding, to which the organization and its Member States have always contributed.

Furthermore, Mr. Taha indicated that in accordance with the mandate given to him by the Executive Committee of the organization, he transmitted the concerns of Member States to the governments of Sweden and Denmark, to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and to the President of the Security Council, informing them that the nature of these provocations has reached an alarming level and expressing the disappointment of the countries of the organization with the continued issuance of authorizations by the competent authorities to commit such acts.

The Secretary General also called on the Swedish authorities to consider the seriousness of the issue for the Islamic world and its repercussions on their relations with the OIC countries, noting that the Swedish government has been informed of the suspension of its status of Special Envoy to the OIC.
