At Borussia Dortmund he was considered one of the most accomplished footballers ever. But injuries kept throwing him back. Even after his departure from BVB, this bad luck didn’t leave him.
At an extremely bitter time, the ex-BVB star has now suffered another injury. Raphaël Guerreiro is missing from Bayern Munich not only in the important semi-final second leg of the Champions League against Real Madrid, but possibly for the entire rest of the season. Even participation in the European Championship with Portugal could be shaky.
Ex-BVB star unlucky again
Guerreiro came to BVB in 2016 as a newly crowned European champion. But from his first season onwards, the Portuguese was plagued by recurring bad luck with injuries. His muscles in particular kept thwarting his plans. He was injured 26 times (!) during his time in Dortmund and missed countless games as a result. His high vulnerability may even have played a role in his departure from the Black and Yellows last summer.

When his contract was not extended, Bayern struck and brought in the versatile left-back. But the now 30-year-old is not unlucky in Munich either. He missed twelve of the first 14 games of the season due to injury – and now it has hit him again.
European Championship start in danger?
In the 3-1 defeat in Stuttgart, no goal had been scored yet and that was the end for Guerreiro. After 17 minutes he injured his ankle in a defensive action and had to be substituted. Not a small injury, as it quickly became clear. Thomas Tuchel, who won the DFP Cup with “Rapha” in Dortmund, said after the game: “He’s not feeling well at all. He walks on crutches. It’s jinxed. We’ll probably drop him for the second leg (against Real, Anm. d. Red.) out of. Bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter.”
Tuchel was right. The day after the game, he was diagnosed with a ligament and capsule injury in his ankle, which will probably cost him not only the game for the Champions League final. Bayern Munich did not specify any downtime, but the injury could cost him the entire rest of the season.
Also exciting:
Is even the start of the 2024 European Championship in danger? The ex-BVB star should be in action with Portugal in Group F from June 18th and is a mainstay in Ronaldo’s team. A loss for parts of the tournament would be bitter for the Portuguese – and a catastrophe for Raphaël Guerreiro. In contrast to his times at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, he has hardly missed a game at the major national tournaments.
