Fear: “Iran could dare to do things under the auspices of international events”

The tense situation between Ukraine and Russia and the possibility of a real war between the two countries, raises the question of Israel’s level of involvement in what is happening. This was discussed today (Monday) by Maj. Gen. (Res.) Uzi Dayan, former chairman of the National Security Council, with Gadi Ness on Radio North 104.5fm: “We have a privilege that we do not have many times – we Israelis should not be pushed into the picture.”

“We have very special relations with Russia,” he said at the outset. “We are an important player here in the region. The issue in Ukraine does not belong to us but only the concern for Israelis and Jews there. “In the world – forget when a country invaded another country. There is potential for a very, very big storm here.”

“Since these are strong armies and there is a possibility of deterioration with the Americans and Europeans I think the Russians are more building on what the US is threatening and not sustaining,” he argued. The thing is, keep in mind that this is a game of fire because the possibility of deterioration to the point of war is great. “I wish I could count on American determination and power. I do not see it in many places in the world and I think the Russians have learned that the Americans are not strong.”

“Iranians can dare to do things under the auspices of international events”

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine are only growing, and the future implications of military action between the two countries on Israel cannot be ignored. Dayan listed the steps that he thinks Israel should take in order not to find itself at a point of no return: “In the first stage, do not be pushed into the picture and worry, as they do, about Israelis there. “If something happens, the fields close very quickly. Later on, I would have noticed two main things – the possibility of them raising their heads in all sorts of places under the big rush and following what is happening with the Iranians.”

“Now it is as if they have forgotten about the negotiations on the nuclear agreement, and the Iranians can under the auspices of international events dare and do things because the world is busy with the big and important things. It is appropriate for the Iranians to take advantage of such a thing and for that we need to be vigilant. More immediate terrorism and later to see what Iran is doing. “We need to be more active and help the Druze in southern Syria because we have the opportunity to change the situation and at least southern Syria will not be a hostile area to Israel,” Dayan stressed.

“We need to keep in mind that at this stage we are not pushing Iran out of Syria, which needs to be done, but mainly making sure that they do not improve positions. Neither with precision rocket weapons nor with Hezbollah operation.

At the end of the conversation, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Uzi Dayan referred to the Israeli government’s conduct in the face of the great crisis between Russia and Ukraine. “Israel is acting carefully and justly. This is not a stage to give grades and not a stage to be pushed into the picture so I think we are doing well. We will really look at what will happen in the next two years, unless all this tension subsides. “They always say, ‘If I do not, I have no choice.’
